Don’t not eat Carbs!

There’s a lot of scaremongering about what to eat, and the demonisation of certain foods and food groups. As touched on before, the dose makes the poison! Overconsumption of ANYTHING can lead to negative health implications. Today we’re back talking about carbs, which absolutely are fine to include as part of a balanced diet.

The insulin hypothesis is the poster child for certain pseudoscience peddling “experts” in the low-carb community. Many of the claims they make have been falsified. Even as more studies show counter results to their hypothesis they dig their heels in further and continue to stand by the superiority of their diet. The basic premise is if you eat carbs it leads to your insulin spiking, which makes your body store excess fat. This then leads to higher levels of hunger and overeating, as well as reducing your energy levels and making you lethargic. Not that a high calorie intake combined with a lower energy output leads to weight gain.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t eat low carb. For some people it’s a good option and it helps them adhere to a diet for weight loss. When calories and protein are accounted for how you choose to split the remaining intake between carbs and fats is largely down to personal preference. But please don’t choose that method out of a fear to eat carbs.

The bottom line is that carbs do not make you fat. An energy surplus over time, from any macronutrient will.
