What’s the best diet?

The best diet?

Sorry to break it to you, but there isn’t one. Let’s just look at that phrase for a moment. Your diet is simply what you habitually eat. But when people ask this question they are usually talking about dieting for weight loss. The most optimal diet (for health) is not the same as the “best” diet for weight loss. When it comes to that it’s about finding the option you can adhere to that puts you in a calorie deficit.

Research

A recent research review by Long Ge et al. looked at how effective different diet methods were & concluded for losing weight the choice of diet only has a trivial to small effect. So choose which diet you prefer & can stick with. It doesn’t matter which diets worked for other people. They likely have different preferences to you & what fits into their lifestyle may not fit into yours.

I don’t understand the trend of trying to “convert” people to your diet. It isn’t a religion or cult (or shouldn’t be at least). Also tastes & life routines change so why some need to commit to one diet I don’t understand either.

Let’s compare it to mobile phones. 🙋🏼‍♀️ Long term Apple user (the Cult of Steve Jobs; as again we’re zealots about these things!). Apple vs Android from my experience is mostly good natured banter. (Possibly a little materialistic too). But do you actually care what mobile phone someone else has? Really? If yes, why? Like genuinely why? How does it affect you?

Taking that, how does how someone else eats affect you? Answer: it doesn’t. People don’t need to eat the same way you eat, in as much as they don’t need to watch the same TV shows, or like the same music. How people eat is influenced by socio-economic factors too. If someone isn’t eating enough fruit & veg it’s almost certainly not because they don’t know they’re good for them.

Balance

This isn’t to say there aren’t health benefits from certain food choices. Recommendations like eat more plants, reduce your consumption of processed food & refined sugars (reduce not eliminate), eat more whole grains & legumes are widely supported by research. Outside of that carb/fat split, meat or dairy consumption is an individual choice.
